Growing up my mother always woke up super early. Even on a Saturday. Some Saturdays we were lucky enough to be spoilt with these little sweetcorn fritters for breakfast. Mieliekoekies!

I love the rain. When it rains in South Africa we eat pancakes. I love pancakes. This year I’ve incorporated traditions from both sides of the equator.

Sometimes I miss being little. On Saturday evenings we would often sit outside as my dad makes a potjie. There are as many recipes out there as there are potjies, but of course, my dad’s Drunken Chicken Potjie is the best!

Let’s face it: South Africa still amazes me every time I go back there. Life there is just lived in exponentials.

Bobotie. A word that brings many warm memories! This warm, subtly spiced meat dish is traditionally served with yellow rice and a banana salad (although we would eat banana salad on any occasion!).
